Based on the other posts I figured that the problem must be the fickle built-in card reader (probably bad tolerances). So, depending on HOW I insert the SD card (ever so slightly angled) it will show up either read-only or read/write. I've tried it numerous times and it's 100% predictable on my machine:
When I push it in on the corner that is closer to the display, it will be read-only.
When I push it in on the corner that is closer to me, it will be read/write.

Thank you very much drsung. Your time and effort has certainly done the SBC world a huge favour! Maybe you want to think about licencing this software. It's going to be HUGE around the world! :-D
Win32DiskImager didn't work on my PC (Windows 10, Updated to the latest June 6th 2018). This software DOES work however. It is simple, fast, portable and works flawlessly. Even while creating an image, it uses negligible RAM and CPU. 5/5 Well earned.
