GAME DETAILS:

The goal of the game is to complete your missions and collect randomly generated “loot” that consists of weapons, skins, shields and many more. The base game has four available character classes, each with their own special abilities and skills. For example, Maya, “the Siren” can block enemies for a few seconds by catching them in a sphere of energy. Axton, “The Commando, provides offensive support by summoning a turret. Salvador, “The Gunzerker” can use his main ability to dual-wield wapons temporarily. Last, but not least, Zer0, “The Assassin”, can distract enemies by spawning a hologram, and can become invisible.

There are also new elements added to the gameplay such as a trading system that can be used during the multiplayer mode, slag, which is a substance that increases damage of your enemies after you manage to cover them in it, Eridium bars, a currency that allows you to purchase storage upgrades and premium items. Also, there is the “secret stash” a small storage area that will permit you to transfer items from one character to another. Increased character customization is also a new option, it has collectable items which unlock a variety of character head designs, vehicle paint and color schemes.

NOTE: FilterTool has been replaced by BLCMM, and FT is no longer the recommended application for working with Borderlands 2/TPS mods. Please head over to the BLCMM page and upgrade!

for Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel

Thanks to MagicGonads for writing the Windows instructions. There are only a couple extra steps for Mac.

If you have any problems with this installation, you can message me (@LORDSATAN) on shadow's discord server.

Java Runtime Environment

This tool requires Java Runtime Environment
If you don't have it already:

  1. Go to Oracle's Site
  2. Check Accept License Agreement (Oracle Binary Code License Agreement for Java SE)
  3. Download the latest version.(I recommend 8u152 as of Nov 2017)
  4. Run the dmg or tar.gz that you downloaded, and follow prompts given.

If you do not want to install JRE, many features that this tool provides can be done manually.

Before you install FilterTool:

  1. Make sure you've read the Reddit post on installing the Unofficial Community Patch.
  2. The folders can be confusing on Mac. You have two Application Support folders. One for Borderlands 2, and one for Steam Apps. You will usually only use the Borderlands 2 folder for editing save files, and manually adding a hotkey for the console. The Steam folder is what we're concerned with, and the path to this folder should be something like this: ~/Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/
  3. Inside this folder should be a folder for BL2 (instructions apply to TPS as well; I'll refer to BL2 for simplicity)
  4. And inside the BL2 folder should be Borderlands 2.app. We have to open this app's contents to access the Binaries folder. Right click Borderlands 2.app, and at the top of the menu, below 'Open,' click 'Show Package Contents.'
  5. From here, navigate to /Contents/GameData/Binaries/. This is where we want to put Patch.txt and FilterTool.jar.
  6. Also be aware that you'll need to use Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal) to start up FilterTool. If you're unfamiliar with Terminal, fortunately we're only entering a single, simple command.

Installation

  1. Go to the Dropbox
  2. Click Download in the top right, and select Direct download
  3. Expand the FilterTool 2.2.zip
  4. Move FilterTool.jar and Patch.txt to:
  • Your Borderlands 2 Binaries Folder
    (/Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Borderlands 2/Borderlands2.app/Contents/GameData/Binaries/)

  • Or your Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Binaries Folder
    (/Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/BorderlandsPreSequel/BorderlandsPreSequel.app/Contents/GameData/Binaries/)

If you wish to use the patch for TPS, replace Patch.txt with this Patch

  1. Open Terminal. Paste this code in (replacing /yourusername/ with the name of your User folder):
  • java -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio=50 -jar /Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/Borderlands 2/Borderlands2.app/Contents/GameData/Binaries/FilterTool.jar
  • Hit enter
  1. That should start up FilterTool. DO NOT close the Terminal window while FilterTool is running.

  2. If you're using FilterTool for the TPS patch, use the following code instead (FilterTool.jar and Patch.txtmust be inside your TPS Binaries folder for this to work):

  • java -XX:MaxHeapFreeRatio=50 -jar /Users/yourusername/Library/Application Support/Steam/steamapps/common/BorderlandsPreSequel/BorderlandsPreSequel.app/Contents/GameData/Binaries/FilterTool.jar
  • Make things easier by simply duplicating FilterTool.jar so that you have one .jar for TPS, and another for BL2. Keep in mind that both .jars will refer to the same mods folder when importing mods. So, for example, when switching from TPS to BL2 in FilterTool, make sure you move your TPS mods folder somewhere else for the time being, and move your BL2 mods folder over. Or else you'll end up importing TPS mods into your BL2 patch.

Unlocking Console

  • Now that you've entered the Terminal command, Java should start up and be visible on your dock. A welcome message should come up, and after that it will ask you if you want to automatically replace engine.upk and enable console. These features did not work for me (10.3.1 High Sierra), so I used the manual method from the UCP Linux/Mac Reddit thread. The auto hex-edit feature likely failed because the folder structure is different on Mac, but you can try anyway.
  • In case it fails, be prepared to follow the Reddit thread's instructions for replacing engine.upk and editing WillowInput.ini. Keep in mind that WillowInput.ini is located in the BL2 Application Support folder, not the Steam Application Support folder.
  • The correct paths for engine.upk and WillowInput.ini are listed in a comment in the reddit thread.

Setting a hotkey for the console allows it to be opened.

Borderlands 2 Mac Saves

  • The keys to choose from are Tilde and F6.
  • Tilde on the QWERTY (Standard) Keyboard is left of 1 and above TAB.

Hex editing engine.upk allows the console to be used in-game for executing mods.

  • It removes the limitation that most commands will be said into chat.
  • And enables the set command to be used outside of offline mode.

Replacing engine.upk with the pre-edited file from the Reddit thread should work for the foreseeable future, since this file is not changed by DLC, patches, hotfixes. However, make sure you don't try to use BL2's engine.upk to replace TPS's.

Opening Patch

  • By default, FilterTool is programmed to load the Patch.txt that you placed in the Binaries folder, along with FilterTool.jar.
  • However, the auto-loading feature often bugs on Mac. It may tell you that you need to place 'PatchFilter' and 'Patch.txt' in the same folder, even though they are already in the same folder.
  • To get around this, click File>Open File, navigate to the Binaries folder, select Patch.txt, and click Open.
  • In general, if you have this bug, always open your patch by using Open File, and never by using Open Patch.
  • However, when you want to save the patch, you can still hit Save Patch.

Configuring Patch

  • This is the window that will now appear every time the patch is loaded.

  • In this window, features of the patch can be disabled and enabled as you please.

The TPS Community Patch has not been made in a way that automatically supports configuration

  • When you're done, you can save the patch in File>Save patch or CMD+S

  • If you wish, you can save the patch as another file in File>Save to file or CMD+SHIFT+S

  • Or change the patch that is opened by default in File>Change default patch (might be bugged)

  • Once you've saved your patch, to run it in the game open the console and type Exec then the filename of the patch you saved, by default, this is Patch.txt. This command doesn't need to be capitalized, so typing exec patch.txt will still work even if your patch is capitalized.

Importing Mods

  • Mods can be imported in Developer tools>Add single mod, and will be added to the patch.

  • A mod folder can be used to import mods in Developer tools>Import mods folder.
It will be created if it does not exist. FilterTool will most likely create a folder called mods in your User directory; don't move this folder. When you download new mods, save them to this folder, and when you import your mods folder it will automatically add all the mods it doesn't already have.

These mods can be checked and unchecked just as the features of the patch can be.
Some mods go better with particular mods, and not so good with others, but you can keep all of them simultaneously and just turn them on or off when you want to. You can also turn off individual features of certain mods. If you download a gun mod, it will likely have a section for the stats/attributes, and a separate section for the skin. If you expand that mod's folder by clicking the drop-down arrow next to it, you can see each section and uncheck individual boxes. Using this feature, you can easily customize many mods to your personal liking.

  • You can create profiles to save different variants on the same patch in Profiles>New profile.

Moving and Editing Mods; Load Order

  • If mods conflict with each other, the mod that is loaded last will take priority over the area of conflict.

  • This can be controlled using structural edits from Developer tools>Enable structural edits.

  • You can now drag around categories to change the load order.

  • Create new categories and move them into other categories to better organize mods.

  • Certain mods will not be configurable automatically. (very small mods, or some older mods)

  • This can be added manually using content edits from Developer tools>Enable content edits.

  • If you expand a mod's folder, you will see a list of all the lines of code. They will be hidden unless you uncheck Developer tools>Hide actual code.

  • You can create a new category using structural edits and move these lines of codes into toggleable categories.

Hotfixes

Before FilterTool, applying hotfixes was much riskier and more complicated than applying normal mods/patches. With FilterTool, you can load these hotfixes into your patch just like any other mod. It will automatically apply the proper code structure.

Language/Font Mods

For these mods you should follow the creator's instructions, which should be in the description at the top of the mod.txt, or in a readme.md located in their github folder.
